Global Talent Independent (GTI) Visa - News updates for Applicants from India

The Global Talent Visa Program, also known as the Global Talent Independent Program, is a streamlined visa pathway for highly skilled professionals to work and live permanently in Australia.

Australia is after the brightest and best global talent to work in ten future-focused sectors. The program is designed to help grow our innovation and tech economies. This will create opportunities for Australians by transferring skills, promoting innovation, and creating jobs.

Australia is also a lifestyle destination, and one of the most prosperous, safe and culturally diverse countries in the world. Australia offers opportunities for innovation, with strong trading links and a business friendly regulatory approach. Through the program, talented individuals will be given permanent residency to make their new lives in Australia.

In 2020-2021, there are 15,000 places available under the program.

​Eligibility

To be granted a visa under the Global Talent Visa Program, a candidate will be highly skilled in one of the 10 target sectors. They will also be able to attract a salary that meets the high income threshold.

Talent​

To be eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa Program under the Global Talent visa, individuals must:​

• prove they are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding achievements
• still be prominent in their field of expertise
• provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise
• have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field
• have a recognised organisation or individual in Australia nominate them as global talent, in the same field as the applicant

Candidates must meet a high standard and show an exceptional track record of professional achievement. This may include senior roles, patents, professional awards and international publications and memberships.

Places are also available to PhD graduates, and certain PhD students who are nearing completion of their thesis and can demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition in a target sector.

High income threshold

Candidates should have the ability to attract a salary at or above the Fair Work high income threshold of AUD153,600. This figure is adjusted annually on 1 July.

In assessing this, factors include

• current salary shown through payslips or a contract, or
• future job offers outlining remuneration, or
• recent PhD graduates in the target sectors

How to determine High income threshold?

The high income threshold is currently $158,500.

This figure is adjusted annually on 1 July.

For a dismissal which took effect on or before 30 June 2021 the high income threshold was $153,600.

What are earnings?

See Fair Work Act s.332

Earnings include:

• wages
• such other amounts (if any) worked out in accordance with the Regulations
• amounts dealt with on the employee’s behalf or as the employee directs, and
• the agreed money value of non-monetary benefits.

Non-monetary benefits are benefits other than an entitlement to a payment of money:

• to which the employee is entitled in return for working, and
• for which a reasonable money value has been agreed by the employee and the employer.

Earnings do not include:

payments the amount of which cannot be determined in advance such as:

• commissions
• incentive-based payments and bonuses, or
• overtime (except guaranteed overtime);
• reimbursements (such as per diem payments), and
• compulsory contributions to a superannuation fund (superannuation guarantee).

Per diem means 'by the day' – a sum of money paid to an employee every day, such as a meal allowance or accommodation allowance.

Superannuation

Compulsory superannuation contributions are not included in the calculation of an employee’s earnings.

Any superannuation paid in excess of compulsory contributions may be included in the calculations of the employee’s earnings.
